Supplemental Survey - Let's Talk About Digital Billboards

Supplemental Survey - Let's Talk About Digital Billboards

Development Services Department

Stage 2: Under Review

Open Date: July 2, 2019 Close Date: July 19, 2019
BACKGROUND: In 1985, Council adopted an ordinance that prevented the addition of more billboards to the city. This same ordinance included the take down of two billboards to relocate one.

In 2007, the City Council approved a one-year Digital Pilot Program, which allows 13 digital billboards within city limits under Sec. 28-54 of the Sign Code and Billboard Ordinance. No new off-premises digital signs are permitted in the City or the Extraterritorial Jurisdiction (ETJ). The existing digital billboards are to be maintained in accordance with the requirements listed in the ordinance.

We need your input on a new proposal regarding billboards!

The proposal under review includes permanently removing four billboards for each digital upgrade. The removal includes one in scenic, urban, or historic corridors and permanently removing 265 "Junior" billboards (less than 100 sq. ft.). The proposal also allows digital faces to be added to the back side of only the 13 existing digital billboards. The proposal does not allow for any new digital billboard structures in the city limits.
