Zona Cultural Streets Project Update

Contractor (Sundt Construction) began construction on the Zona Cultural Streets project in January 2022. The project consists of three 2017 Bond Projects, including Commerce Street (Frio Street to Santa Rosa Street), San Saba Street (Nueva Street to Martin Street) and Santa Rosa Street (Cesar Chavez Boulevard to Martin Street). The Project consists of utility upgrades, roadway reconstruction, traffic and pedestrian signal upgrades, new street lighting, sidewalk widening along with streetscape and landscape improvements, new bus shelters and pedestrian amenities including lighting in accordance with Zona Cultural themes and materials. Summarized below are the various street closures with maps, and projected work efforts to date. 

  • October 2, 2023 thru December 1, 2023: Santa Rosa & Cesar Chavez (eastside of Santa Rosa closed at Cesar Chavez intersection) - Roadway reconstruction, concrete pavement, sidewalks, driveways, pavers, illumination and signalization, provisions will be in place to account for pedestrian traffic.
  • As early as October 19, 2023 the contractor will be switching Santa Rosa northbound traffic to the west side of the roadway starting this week. We will be using one southbound lane, one left turn lane, and one northbound lane all on the west side of Santa Rosa so the contractor can shift to Phase 3 along Santa Rosa continuing construction efforts. New lane configuration will be from Cesar Chavez to Houston. Anticipated duration will be until April 2024.
  • January 2022 thru December 2023: Commerce Street (Pecos to Frio) - Sidewalks, driveways, pavers, illumination and signalization. At least one lane of traffic (westbound) will be maintained at all times, provisions will be in place to account for pedestrian traffic.
  • April 2022 thru January 2024: Commerce Street (San Saba to Pecos) - Sidewalks, driveways, pavers, illumination and signalization. At least one lane of traffic (westbound) will be maintained at all times, provisions will be in place to account for pedestrian traffic.
  • April 2022 thru December 2023: Commerce Street & Pecos Intersection – Roadway, sidewalks, pavers, and illumination. At least one lane of traffic (westbound) will be maintained at all times, provisions will be in place to account for pedestrian traffic.
  • September 2022 thru January 2024: Commerce Street (Santa Rosa to San Saba) - Concrete pavement, sidewalks, driveways, pavers and illumination. At least one lane of traffic (westbound) will be maintained at all times, provisions will be in place to account for pedestrian traffic.
  • January 2022 thru December 2023: San Saba (Nueva to Dolorosa) - Roadway reconstruction, concrete pavement, sidewalks, driveways, pavers, illumination and signalization, provisions will be in place to account for pedestrian traffic.
  • May 8, 2023 thru February 2024: San Saba Full Road Closure (Dolorosa to Commerce) - SAWS sewer, water, and storm drain, provisions will be in place to account for pedestrian traffic.  
  • November 2023 thru December 2023: Santa Rosa (Commerce to Houston) - Northbound curb lane will be closed for installation of CPS gas; provisions will be in place to account access to businesses and pedestrian traffic. 
  • November 2023 thru December 2023: Santa Rosa (Dolorosa to Commerce) – Northbound curb lane will be closed for installation of SAWS water; provisions will be in place to account access to businesses and pedestrian traffic. 
  • October 2023 thru March 2024: Santa Rosa (Cesar Chavez to Houston) – West side of roadway will be closed for roadway excavation and reconstruction.
  • The Farmers Market NE Stairwell Access will be closed thru February 2024. Provisions have been made to accommodate employees access only. Customers and pedestrians will need to utilize the main covered visitors entrance on San Saba to the Farmers Market. This closure is necessary to install new utilities and proposed sidewalk improvements. Detours will be clearly posted and in effect for the duration of the stairwell closure.
