WW White Road at Rice Road Safety Improvements
WW White Road at Rice Road Safety Improvements
COMPLETED!
The new traffic signal became operational on March 11, 2026 at the intersection of WW White Rd. and Rice Road.
To improve safety along WW White Road, Vision Zero SA and the Transportation Department:
- Upgraded the traffic signal at Rice Road to metal mast arms
- Added pedestrian crosswalk markings at all approaches at Rice Road
- Moved the northbound and southbound bus stops to be closer to E. Houston Street's marked crosswalks
- Closed two driveways and constructing a new sidewalk on the northern side of the intersection of S WW White Road and Rice Road
Background
The WW White Road corridor (Lavender Lane to Retta Street) was identified through the Vision Zero Program as a High Injury Network. This designation is given to areas where a significant number of pedestrian crashes have occurred. In recent years, efforts have been made by the Public Works Department and the Transportation Department to enhance safety along the corridor for all road users. In 2023, the intersection of WW White Road and E. Houston Street underwent a redesign and a mid-block crosswalk with warning beacons was installed on WW White Road between Lavender Lane and Lord Road. By implementing the WW White Road Safety Improvements project, we hope to make our roads safer for everyone.
