2017-2022 Bond Project: World Heritage Architectural Gateway
The site for this project is located at Mission Road and Roosevelt Avenue in District 5, as identified through the World Heritage Beautification Assessment.
PROJECT SCOPE
- Two entry monuments with low planter walls located at the NW and SW corners at Mission Road and Roosevelt Avenue
- One artistic panel (3’,6” in height; 22’ in length) along a 25 ft. stone wall in length (2’-6” in height) located at the NW corner at Mission Road and Roosevelt Avenue, with two stone columns.
- Low stone walls along Mission Road (North & South)
- Planting beds, landscaping, irrigation, and lighting
In addition, the City of San Antonio’s Public Works Department, the World Heritage Office, and the Arts & Culture Department are coordinating a public art component that will be integrated into the architectural feature that will enhance the wayfinding experience for San Antonio residents and visitors who travel along the World Heritage Trail. The public art component will consist of a pair of sculptures and a two-dimensional artwork designed to serve as a gateway marker along the World Heritage Trail.

World Heritage Architectural Gateway Dedication & Ribbon-Cutting
Join the City of San Antonio World Heritage Office along with Council District 5, Department of Arts & Culture, and the Capital Delivery Department, to celebrate a ribbon-cutting and dedication of the World Heritage Architectural Gateway, a place-based design, focusing on connecting location, culture, and community, along the World Heritage Trail. Residents and visitors are invited to view and experience newly installed walking paths, faux bois, and a colorful and artistic tile mural, inspired by the San Antonio Missions and the natural environment.
The World Heritage Architectural Gateway is located at the intersection of Roosevelt Avenue and Mission Road, along the World Heritage Trail, highlighting and connecting the San Antonio community and visitors to the historic San Antonio Missions.

PROJECT BACKGROUND
The 2017-2022 Bond Program allocated a total of $37 million for projects within the World Heritage Buffer Zone to include $5 million for signage and wayfinding. The architectural features/gateway component is estimated to be $900,000.
